Abracadabra - I'm Jewish! Thoughts on Conversion

Abracadabra - I'm Jewish! Thoughts on Conversion

15.12.2009

17:30 Film: Leap of Faith

19:15 Study led by: Udi Hirshler. A modern meditation on the conversion process and the dramatic cultural and theological change experienced by converts as seen in Leap of Faith - a film documenting the lives of Christians living in the US who underwent the radical process of conversion to Judaism. The Limmud process will attempt to investigate and understand the compromise the conversion process entails as a process of gradual conscious/cultural change on the one hand and metamorphosis on the other. We will then view the conversion process from the perspective of historical and halakhic contexts

Early Memories and Later Memories

20:00 Film: In Search of Memory : Neuroscientist Erich Kandel

21:45 Study led by: Hava Pinhas. Where does memory go?

Following the film, we will analyze the meeting point between personal memory and collective memory through the Mikra text on the separation of Jacob from his sons and the separation of Moses from the Israelites before his entry to the land of Israel. We will also read excerpts from S.Y. Agnon's Nobel Prize in Literature acceptance speech as well as poems by Amir Gilboa. The Limmud will take place in a Hevruta model as part of a comparative session and will allow for the expression of the participants' personal biographies.

10:00 Film: The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler

11:45 Study led by: Iddo Gottgold. Who are we and how do we develop courage and valor? Is a heroic act or an extreme situation necessary in order to merit an act of valor or do our day-to-day lives offer possibilities for bravery? Perhaps the mere thought of selflessness and the act of placing oneself in personal danger reflect an ideal "self" and give a virtual stage to an examination of art and our values.
