MARCH 2010

Tribute to Giuseppe Tornatore

Giuseppe Tornatore began working at an early age. At 16, he began directing, first for theatre and then short films that won awards in festivals around the world. His breakthrough film was Cinema Paradiso. When first screened it was coldly received; however, after re-editing and presenting it at the Cannes Film Festival, it won critical and wide acclaim. The film is a sentimental song of praise to the power of cinema. Since then Tornatore has created many films that can be divided into two subjects: Sicilian films and his international films, where Tornatore has a more cosmopolitan approach in genres, style, and actors.

Finnish Film Week

The Finnish Film Week will present a selection of Finnish films from the past few years. The opening film, The Home of Dark Butterflies, details the story of a boys orphanage on an isolated island and will make the audience ask themselves how long does one have to pay for sins of the past. Other films deal with the conflict between tradition and modernity, moral dilemmas, compassion, and daily life. We hope that the new generation of filmmakers emerging from Finland will be able to showcase Finnish culture, while providing a fascinating cinematic experience.
