SEPTEMBER 2011

From Osama to Obama

Post 9/11 American cinema sees the American body as a problem. The solution was found outside of cinema, with the election of a black president. The series of films screened this month represents and conveys the influence of 9/11 on America's need to form a new self-image that will at once keep the characteristics of the old image, while expanding its boundaries. It also reveals the power of cinema to act as a seismograph of cultural undercurrents, currents that eventually surge from the big screen and change reality.

2011 Portugal Film Week

The Portugal Film Week has become an annual tradition that exposes current cinema produced in Portugal to the Israeli audience. This year, the program is dedicated to one of Portugal's most talented and beloved actors Vitor Norte. The film selection deals directly and indirectly with Portugal's darker days, known as "Estado Novo" - the 40 year Salazar's dictatorship regime. Vitor Norte participates in four out of the five films presented and will be a guest of the Cinematheque.
