Brazilian Film Week

It is a great pleasure to introduce the Brazilian Film Festival in Israel. A total of seven recent films that represent different genres and ways to portray Brazil will be exhibited. 

Opening Event

Joâo, O Maestro

The true story of gifted musician Joדo Carlos Martins, whose health issues as a child did not deter him from becoming one of the biggest promises of classical music. A loving cinematic biography of one of the most famous Brazilian pianists of all time. 

Two Irenes

In the shimmering heat of Brazil of the 1980s, 13-year-old Irene discovers that another girl her age and with the same name lives in town. The two become fast friends, but soon discover there is more to their connection than meets the eye. 

Loveling

Dir.: Gustavo Pizzi

Irene has only a few days to surpass her anxieties over her eldest son leaving the nest. Superficially everything here is banal, but thanks to the attention to detail, the small moments, the unique characters, Loveling is in fact a warm and captivating human drama. 

Elis

A marvelous biography of singer Elis Regina. A child prodigy, when she arrived in Rio in the mid-1960s, her songs became record shattering hits. Elis was part of the musical movement that made Brazilian music recognized throughout the globe.

Bingo: The King of the Mornings

Augusto is an actor that gets his big break with the role of Bingo the clown, but a clause in his contract forbids him from revealing his true identity. His road to fame is paved with obstacles. This is the true story of the rise and fall of an anonymous star. 

Just Like Our Parents

Rosa’s life is turned upside down by a family secret that propels her to embark on an unexpected journey. Lais Bodanzky explores the Brazilian family. Maria Ribeiro, in the lead role, gives the film its emotional anchor.

Vazante

Brazil 1821. A rich cattle herder returns home with numerous slaves only to discover that his wife died in labor. He marries her 12-year-old niece, but soon leaves her alone in a violent and racist environment. “A hushed opera that builds to a shattering climax” (Hollywood Reporter).
